Why website AI answers need source citations
A citation does more than make an answer look trustworthy. It lets the visitor inspect the rule, exception, procedure, or specification in its original context.
It also gives the team evidence for diagnosing a weak answer.
What a useful citation must do
| Check | Useful result |
|---|---|
| Relevance | The source addresses the visitor's question |
| Support | The page contains the fact stated in the answer |
| Specificity | The link opens the actual article or document, not a generic homepage |
| Currency | The source is the current version |
| Context | The visitor can inspect prerequisites and exceptions around the passage |
| Access | The visitor is allowed to open the source |
A related page is not necessarily a supporting source. Open the link and locate the claim.
Citations help find the failed stage
If an answer is wrong but cites the correct page, inspect whether the response added unsupported meaning. If it cites an unrelated page, investigate retrieval. If it cites an old page, fix source freshness or conflicts. If there is no citation, the review starts with less evidence.
Seekdown's Show highlighted results setting displays reference cards below answers.
Keep highlighted results on during testing. If the public design later hides them, make sure another clear route to the source remains when verification matters.
Do not overstate what citations prove
A citation does not guarantee the answer is correct. The source may be outdated, contradictory, or misinterpreted. Several citations can also create false confidence when none supports the exact claim.
For higher-risk questions, require the answer to preserve important conditions and direct the visitor to the full source.
Test citation quality
Build questions for policies, technical limits, comparisons, and missing information. For each answer:
- open every source;
- identify the text supporting each material claim;
- check the source version;
- note missing conditions; and
- fail the answer if the link does not support it.
Source citations make website AI answers inspectable. Their value comes from the quality of the source and the discipline of checking it.
